If you’ve been Googling this question, you’re not alone — and you’re probably not getting a straight answer. Here’s one.
Accounting fees are something everyone wants to know about and nobody talks about openly. Most firms make you schedule a call before they’ll say anything about price. We think that’s backwards.
So here it is: what does accountant cost in Illinois actually look like for a small business?
For most small businesses in Illinois with $500K–$5M in revenue, expect to pay between $400 and $1,500 per month. That covers bookkeeping, financial statements, and tax preparation.
Where you land in that range depends on:
If someone quotes you $150/month for “full-service accounting,” be skeptical. That’s either bookkeeper-only, heavily automated, or a setup where tax prep is billed separately at year-end.
When you hire a full-service accounting firm, you’re paying for more than bank reconciliation.
Monthly bookkeeping — Reconciling accounts, categorizing transactions, maintaining your general ledger, and producing accurate financial statements every month.
Tax preparation — Your business return prepared by someone who’s been watching your numbers all year. Not someone seeing your books for the first time in March.
Year-round availability — Questions come up throughout the year. A good accounting firm answers them quickly — not just during tax season.
Proactive planning — The difference between a $10,000 tax bill and a $6,000 tax bill is often decisions made in October. The IRS requires quarterly estimated tax payments from business owners — your accountant should be guiding this process year-round.
Hourly billing — You pay for every hour of work. Common at larger CPA firms. The downside: you never know what the bill will be. You hesitate to ask questions because every email costs money.
Annual retainer — You pay once a year for tax prep and basic bookkeeping. Fine if you just need a return filed. But you’re on your own for 10 months of the year.
Monthly flat fee — You pay a fixed amount each month for an ongoing relationship. This is the model we use at Accounting Freedom. It’s the best fit for small business owners who want consistent service and predictable costs.
These factors push your monthly fee higher or lower:
Transaction volume — A business doing 50 transactions a month is simpler than one doing 500. More transactions means more time.
Number of accounts — Multiple bank accounts, credit cards, and payment processors all add complexity.
Payroll — If you have employees, payroll processing is typically a separate service. Usually $75–$250/month depending on employee count.
Cleanup needed — If your books haven’t been maintained, there’s often cleanup work required before a monthly rhythm can begin. That’s typically a one-time fee.
Advisory level — Some owners want clean books and accurate returns. Others want monthly calls, proactive planning, and cash flow forecasting. The latter costs more — and is usually worth it.
Here’s the number most people skip: the cost of doing it wrong.
Overpaying in taxes because no one did year-round planning. Missing a cash flow problem because books were two months behind. Getting hit with payroll penalties because quarterly deposits were miscalculated.
These aren’t hypotheticals. They happen constantly to business owners who went with the cheapest option.
Good accounting doesn’t cost money. It saves it.
